Winter Park Overview
Originally named Lakeview in 1858, in 1870 it was renamed Osceola. The name Winter Park was chosen in 1881 by its founders. In 1885, a group of local businessmen incorporated into The Winter Park Land Company to develop the roads, railways and hotels. Chartered in 1887 and incorporated in 1925, the city was founded and developed as a tranquil winter resort location to escape cold northern winters, rest and relax.
Now a thriving commercial working hub, Winter Park area still is a top destination known for beauty, culture, spectacular homes and brilliant lakes. An amazing oak tree canopy shelters Park Avenue’s shopping district along brick-lined streets framing Central Park. One of the nation’s most prestigious billeted art shows is the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. Close proximity to major highways and central Florida amenities make this an ideal location to vacation, build business or live.
More than 29,943 residents live in Winter Park’s 10.2 square miles of land and water. It has successfully integrated Florida’s SunRail® commuter service with its train station and Amtrak. City government, finance, planning, maintenance, utilities, police and fire departments are nationally recognized, award-winning staff committed to quality of life and managed growth.
Near Denning Drive and Fairbanks Avenue is the site of one of the country’s most-watched sinkholes as it swallowed up nearly a city block in 1981. Now a lovely landscaped area that looks like a small lake, the shoreline of the Winter Park sinkhole is no longer a constant reminder of the collapse that consumed a house and several vehicles.
